Toroki SimSwitch®

Toroki SimSwitch® is a functional simulation of the data plane operations common to all Ethernet switches. Toroki SimSwitch® facilitates the development of control and management plane applications by enabling software development using low cost, resource-rich desktop computers.

Most Network Equipment Manufacturers develop application software on silicon vendor reference platforms while production hardware is being designed. While useful for prototyping purposes, these systems are typically expensive, difficult to acquire (especially for new silicon), and lose value quickly once production hardware is available. At the same time, much of the functionality at the control and management plane layers - such as configuration and processing of data flows, protocol implementation, and user interface operations - does not require actual switching silicon for development purposes. The use of reference platforms for early stage software development represents a case of the wrong tool for the job.

Toroki SimSwitch® offers a compelling alternative. By utilizing powerful desktop computers to simulate the core functions of any modern Ethernet switching chip, engineers can efficiently and effectively develop application software with no need for reference hardware. Ethernet traffic is mapped to physical Network Interface Card (NIC) ports, resulting in a highly realistic simulation environment. In addition, by using their desktop computers, engineers can bring to bear a plethora of productivity tools, making this a truly transformative approach to developing software for networking equipment.
